Y'Chi - focussed, mindful running
MINDFULNESS

In Chi Running, if Chi refers to the energy flowing through us, then Y refers to our intention. So Y'Chi is about directing our energy, with intent. Think about the cat that spots a bird in the yard and immediately becomes so focussed. It's almost as if there's a magnetic pull between the two, that draws the cat ever closer.
So what does that have to do with running?
When I am in the midst of a run and find my mind wandering, or am flagging a bit, it's a good cue for me to utilize Y'Chi. First the setup. Imagine an eye in the middle of your forehead, sometimes referred to as the 'mind's eye'. Now imagine there's a pyramid connecting that eye with your two shoulders. We want those three points of the pyramid to be 'locked in' and directed towards a point in the distance. Focus on something about 30 meters away. I like to focus on something organic, like a tree branch. I imagine that it is drawing me ever closer - our energy connected.
That focus seems to still the mind and provides an opportunity to do a body scan. Am I lengthening from the crown of my head? Are my shoulders relaxed? Are my arms at 90 degrees and swinging backwards with a smooth, relaxed motion? Are my lower legs relaxed and the ankles able to float up as a result of the force of the oncoming road? Is my body aligned - the dots connected (ears, shoulders, hips and ankles)?
Before I know it, I have reached the tree branch and then focus on another one up the road.
Y'Chi brings an element of mindfulness into running as you focus on your form, your breath, your surroundings as you are drawn forward. It helps to create a more natural and relaxed running experience. On your next run, tap into it and see for yourself how it feels.
As always, feel free to contact me with any questions or for clarification. Run well this month - we all need it with the extra calories that come with the holiday season!
