Relax - Think “Cotton”
NEEDLE IN COTTON
EFFICIENCY

One of the images we find helpful for Chi Running, is the Tai Chi concept of ‘needle in cotton’. We maintain good posture (needle), while relaxing our limbs and shoulders and even our face - think ‘cotton’. Relaxation plays a key role in improving efficiency, reducing impact, and allowing the body to move with greater ease.
Why Relaxation Matters in Chi Running
1. Reduces Tension and Improves Efficiency
Many runners unconsciously hold tension in their shoulders, arms and legs, which wastes energy and leads to fatigue. In Chi Running, relaxation allows your body to move fluidly, conserving energy and helping you run longer with less effort. When you relax, your muscles only engage as much as necessary, preventing unnecessary strain.
2. Lowers Risk of Injury
Tension often leads to overuse injuries because tight muscles restrict natural movement and increase the impact on joints. Relaxed muscles, on the other hand, absorb shock better and allow for a more natural range of motion. By staying loose and fluid, you minimize the risk of common running injuries such as shin splints, IT band syndrome, and plantar fasciitis.
3. Improves Running Form and Cadence
A relaxed body responds better to subtle adjustments in form. When your muscles are tense, it’s harder to maintain an efficient cadence or adapt to different terrains. Chi Running encourages a relaxed upper body, which allows the lower body to work in harmony without excess effort. This results in a smoother stride and a natural, sustainable rhythm.
4. Enhances Mental Focus and Flow
Relaxation isn’t just physical—it’s also mental. When you let go of unnecessary tension, your mind becomes more focused and in tune with your body. This sense of flow allows you to run more mindfully, reducing stress and enhancing your overall running experience.
I wish it was as easy as just being told to ’just relax’. It does take intentional practise. The Chi Running workshops assist with some practical steps.
One of the simplest ways to encourage relaxation is to smile while you run. A relaxed, positive mindset helps keep your body loose and makes running feel more enjoyable.
